FAQ

  • CrossFit is an exercise programme that combines different activities to help you get stronger, fitter, and healthier. It improves your overall fitness by improving skills, like strength, speed, flexibility, and endurance. Read more about CrossFit.

  • CrossFit's functional movements are designed to enhance your overall physical capabilities, making everyday tasks easier, reducing the risk of injury, and improving your quality of life. By incorporating exercises that simulate real-life activities, CrossFit helps improve your overall physical functionality and translates to various aspects of your everyday life.

  • You don't need to be fit to start CrossFit. CrossFit is designed to be scalable and suitable for individuals of all fitness levels. Our experienced coaches will guide you through workouts tailored to your abilities, helping you progress at your own pace. Read more about CrossFit.

  • CrossFit is designed to be inclusive and adaptable for people of all ages and fitness levels and our members’ ages range from 6-70. Our coaches ensure that workouts are modified to suit your abilities and accommodate any specific needs or considerations you may have. CrossFit's functional movements are designed to mimic the natural movements we use in our daily lives. By incorporating exercises that simulate real-life activities, CrossFit will help you improve your overall physical functionality and translates to various aspects of your everyday life such as carrying heavy shopping bags and walking up stairs. As you get older you’ll come to appreciate the increased flexibility and strength that CrossFit workouts provide.

  • CrossFit can be a fantastic complement to other sports and activities you participate in. By incorporating strength and power exercises, it improves overall strength and power, crucial for explosive sports movements like sprinting, jumping, or throwing. The conditioning workouts, including high-intensity interval training (HIIT), enhance endurance and stamina, benefiting sports involving sustained effort like football or distance running. CrossFit's varied movements challenge agility, balance, and coordination, improving body control and responsiveness necessary for sports like tennis or martial arts. Emphasising core stability and injury prevention, it strengthens core muscles important for golf, swimming, or martial arts while reducing injury risks. Furthermore, the mental toughness developed in CrossFit transfers to all sporting activities, improving focus and determination. By integrating CrossFit into your training routine, you can develop a well-rounded athletic foundation, improve your overall fitness, and enhance your performance in other sports.

  • While CrossFit workouts are favoured by some athletes and sportspeople, it is not exclusively for them. Our CrossFit programme has been designed with non-athletes in mind and can be adapted to accommodate people of various fitness levels and goals. Whether you're a beginner looking to improve your overall fitness or an experienced athlete seeking to take your performance to the next level, CrossFit can be tailored to meet your needs. Our supportive community and skilled coaches will ensure you have a positive and challenging experience, regardless of your athletic background.

  • Absolutely! Dominus is loved by our members for its vibrant community atmosphere, but it can also be a great fit for those who prefer to work out alone. We offer various class formats and open gym hours, allowing you to choose the training style that suits you best. You can participate in our group classes and still focus on your individual progress, or take advantage of our open gym sessions to follow your own workout routine. Whichever option you choose, our knowledgeable coaches will be available to provide guidance and support whenever you need it.

  • At Dominus, we provide the necessary equipment for your workouts. All you need to bring is yourself, some comfortable workout attire, and a positive attitude. Some of our members prefer to use their own jump ropes so please discuss this with your coach to see if purchasing your own rope would be beneficial. Athletes in some activities may benefit from supplementary gear like belts, but if you’re new to CrossFit and weightlifting then you’ll receive advice from the coaches if they feel your training will benefit from any specialist gear.

  • The frequency of your attendance depends on your personal goals and schedule. To experience progress and see results, we generally recommend attending at least three CrossFit classes per week. Consistency is key when it comes to achieving fitness goals, so finding a routine that works for you is important. We understand that personal situations can prevent you from working out this much so speak to our coaches. Our flexible class timetable and membership options allow you to choose the attendance frequency that fits your lifestyle best.

  • While CrossFit does offer opportunities for competitive events and competitions, it's not solely focused on that aspect. CrossFit at Dominus is a comprehensive fitness program designed to improve your overall fitness, strength, endurance, and flexibility. It's about challenging yourself, pushing your limits, and achieving personal milestones, whether or not you choose to compete. At Dominus we emphasise a supportive and inclusive community where individuals of all levels can thrive, regardless of their interest in events. That said, our events are always an exciting and motivating experience so once you’ve joined, we suggest that you pop along to one of our events to experience the atmosphere and watch your fellow Dominus members competing against each other, themselves and the global CrossFit community.

  • "WOD" stands for "Workout of the Day". It refers to the daily exercise routine or workout that our members perform during our CrossFit classes. "Rx" stands for "as prescribed." It's a term used to describe the recommended standard or official workout for a particular CrossFit exercise or WOD. When someone completes a workout "Rx," it means they performed all the movements and repetitions exactly as specified without scaling or modifying the workout. Don’t worry though, no one is expected to do workouts "Rx" all the time — our coaches will scale activities so you can challenge yourself without compromising safety or feeling overwhelmed. Performing a WOD Rx is often used by our members as a goal to aim for.

  • Our Unlimited, Twice-Weekly and Open Gym memberships are monthly rolling memberships. You can cancel at any time.

  • Of course! Just speak to one of our coaches who will make the changes to your membership.

  • Yes. We have day passes and 10 Session Stamp Cards for those that just need access to our facilities and equipment without a full membership. We also have a monthly Open Gym membership that grants access to Open Gym sessions, but no classes. Please see our memberships and prices for more details.

  • We understand that you sometimes only have time to train when you’re looking after small or furry members of your family so feel free to bring them along. Please note — we don’t offer specific facilities for kids or pets in waiting so please ensure that both are under safe supervision while you train. Having children or dogs in waiting at Dominus is always at the discretion of the class coach or your Personal Trainer so please check with them before bringing any of your little ones along.

  • As long as your child is of primary school age upwards they can attend our CrossFit Kids or CrossFit Teens classes.

  • You can find us at Clifton Moor in York. The address is Unit 3 Stirling Park, Bleriot Way, York, YO30 4WU (Google Maps Link). We’re easily accessible from the A1237 outer ring road and also from Water Lane at Clifton and via Clifton Moor Gate off the B1363 (Wigginton Road).

  • We’re open Monday-Friday: 6am-8.30pm. Saturday: 8am–4pm and Sunday: 10am-11am & 4pm-5pm. See our timetable for class times or read more about the wide range of classes we have on offer.

  • Ha! The infamous burpees! While burpees are a common exercise in CrossFit workouts, they are not the only exercise you'll encounter. Our CrossFit classes incorporate a wide variety of movements to keep your workouts dynamic and engaging. However, it's true that burpees often make an appearance due to their effectiveness in building strength and endurance. We’ll always tailor workouts to your fitness and skill levels so speak to your class coach if you’re having trouble with burpees.

  • A burpee involves squatting down, kicking your legs back into a push-up position, performing a push-up, jumping your feet back in, and explosively jumping into the air with hands overhead. Burpees can be quite intense, but they engage multiple muscle groups, including your legs, core, chest, and arms. They're a great exercise for building strength, endurance, and getting your heart rate up. Remember, if you're new to burpees or any exercise, our coaches will guide you through proper form and offer modifications to suit your fitness level.

What Our Members Say

“I’d always avoided CrossFit on the advice of others who thought it was too competitive for me. I wanted to try for myself. I wished I had sooner. I’ve far exceeded the expectations of my surgeon in terms of movement and it’s helped combat what could be debilitating side effects from cancer treatment. I feel stronger and fitter. I’m happy to be back training, so my mental health is better and it helps me feel able to hike faster and higher. Just try a class, if you don’t like it, don’t come back but I’m pretty sure you’ll love it. Talk to people, ask questions, everyone is friendly.”
