What is CrossFit?

A different way to get fitter and stronger.

Established in 2001, CrossFit is a physical exercise philosophy that has taken the fitness world by storm.

CrossFit takes parts from high-intensity interval training (exercising in fast, short bursts), Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics (jumping and stretching), powerlifting (squatting, bench pressing, and deadlifting), gymnastics, kettlebell lifting (special weights with a handle), callisthenics (using your own body to get stronger), Strongman (lifting and carrying heavy objects), and more.

CrossFit is a fantastic way to get fit. It combines different types of exercises together in each workout session and the workouts are designed to be fun. During the classes you perform different exercises and activities as part of a coach-led group — no more boring workouts!

With over 12,000 CrossFit-affiliated gyms spread across more than 150 countries, CrossFit has become a global phenomenon.

You don’t need to be fit to start CrossFit!

CrossFit workouts are designed to be scalable and suitable for individuals of all fitness levels.

To make a workout scalable, our coaches provide alternative movements or variations of an exercise based on your current ability and fitness level.

For example, pull-ups can be substituted with assisted pull-ups until you develop the strength for regular pull-ups. Those with less strength can use lighter weights or even perform the movements without any additional weight until they feel more comfortable and confident. The number of repetitions or the duration of a workout can also be adjusted to make it more manageable for different fitness levels.

Our qualified coaches are experienced in scaling activities so you can challenge yourself without compromising safety or feeling overwhelmed. They’ll guide you through workouts tailored to your abilities, helping you progress at your own pace.

Functional movements

Through exercises that simulate real-life activities, CrossFit will improve your overall physical functionality in all aspects of your life. By building functional strength, CrossFit can make tasks like lifting shopping bags, carrying heavy objects, and even playing with your children or grandchildren easier and safer.

Our CrossFit workouts also incorporate movements that improve your range of motion, flexibility, and joint mobility. With this, everyday movements become more fluid and comfortable, including bending, reaching, and twisting. Other benefits of our CrossFit workouts include improved cardiovascular fitness, better balance and coordination and functional core strength — this last one can benefit you during activities such as sitting at a desk, standing for long periods, or participating in sports.

Although taking any form of exercise is to be applauded and encouraged, the benefits that CrossFit training brings can’t be gained by running on a treadmill at your local gym a few times a week — comments from our members will attest to that!

What to expect at Dominus CrossFit

We have regular CrossFit classes throughout the week (see Timetable). Our CrossFit classes are group fitness sessions led by our expert coaches where you exercise with others. It's like joining a team to have fun and exercise together. During each class, the coach will guide you and show you how to do the exercises. They’re also on hand to make sure you're safe and help you improve your skills and scale the exercises if required.

Workout of the Day (WODs)

"Workout of the Day" (WOD) is a term used to describe the specific workout planned for a particular day. CrossFit's WOD adds variety and keeps workouts interesting — it challenges your body in different ways and prevents you from getting bored with the same exercises.

The WOD can consist of a combination of different exercises and movements. It may include activities like weightlifting, bodyweight exercises (such as push-ups or pull-ups), cardiovascular exercises (like running or rowing), or other functional movements that target different muscle groups and fitness components.

The WOD promotes continuous improvement and measurable progress in your fitness journey. By tracking your performance in various WODs over time, you can see how you're getting stronger, faster, or more skilled in different areas of fitness.

WOD’s are designed by our coaches and published in advance on the BoxMate app where you can book your spot in an upcoming class, and afterwards track your progress and post your achievements.

CrossFit as a sport

People from all over the world compete in CrossFit competitions to test their strength, speed, and skills. These competitions are where athletes push themselves to the limit and see who can complete the workouts the fastest or lift the heaviest weights. We regularly hold events for our members so you can test yourself against your #TeamDominus workout companions and every year there’s the CrossFit Open where you can perform a series of workouts and submit your scores to see how you rank amongst the global CrossFit community.

The Crossfit Open

The CrossFit Open is an exciting annual event that brings the global CrossFit community together. It's a worldwide competition where athletes of all levels participate and test their fitness against others. During the CrossFit Open, athletes complete a series of challenging workouts at their CrossFit gym and submit their results online. Participants push themselves to their limits, striving for personal bests and embracing the spirit of friendly competition. The CrossFit Open is not only a chance to see how you measure up against others, but also an opportunity for personal growth, setting goals, and celebrating achievements.

What Our Members Say

“Dominus is a really special place. It is inclusive, welcoming and a supportive place to train. I’ve never been a person who enjoyed going to the gym, however now I love it and I’m often there 3-4 times a week. I feel comfortable to be myself and know that nobody will judge you, no matter what you look like or your ability.”
